Teledynamics is pleased to announce the addition of OpenOffice.org version 1.1 Release Candidate to our popular OpenOffice.org on the Open Content Network P2P file download page.

Release Candidate 1.1 is proving to be a hot item, swamping the file server mirrors who carry it. Using OCN, we are able to serve the file simultaneously from half a dozen mirrors world-wide as well as pulling portions of the file from any other downloaders who remain connected to the network. Because the strain on server network resources decreases as demand for the content grows, OCN provides the perfect vehicle for distributing large and popular free-software files such as OpenOffice.org.

Initial Impressions on 1.1RC

We've been charged with looking after a software requirements specification by our clients and, sadly, the document is in Microsoft WordXP format; on receipt of it, I loaded it into OpenOffice.org's 1.0.3.1 release only to watch as it gleefully tumbled into a "repaginating" process that added at least a dozen pages to the document length. It was beginning to look like taking on this doc was going to cost me big money for a whole second computer plus the cost of MsOffice when the serendipidous announcement of 1.1RC popped up in the aggregators.

I haven't actually started to work on the document, so I can't vouch for much about 1.1RC, but I can say that (1) it didn't repaginate the MsWord document and (2) when I closed the document without making any changes, it didn't ask if I wanted to save it (the old version considered the conversion to be a document change).

So far, so good.
