Parents who choose to homeschool their children face most of the same challenges as those experienced by all distance educators, and the use of modern ICTs goes a long way towards meeting some of them. However, the choice to educate outside of the mainstream generates its own peculiar set of problems derived from this extra dimension of remoteness, and from the stark fact that most parents have no training as educators, let alone any expertise in the specialised field of distance education.
