The beginning is a very good place to start

The pages in this section contain tutorials and other helpful resources we have collected in the process of learning how to do what we do. As we collect notes to understanding a new technology, the resource lists are published here, and in many instances, technology papers we have written for our clients also end up in the TCI Help pages.

Tutorial Pages

In addition to these tutorials, TCI sponsors some special purpose community documentation projects which support the Linux Kernel and users of the Audio-Desktop Emacspeak software:

Community Review Document: Acer 330T Laptop Configuration

A slightly dated document on installing Linux on the Acer Travelmate line of laptops, given new life by being wrapped in a QuickTopics Document Review

The Linux Kernel Architecture

This is a proposed trade book to map the highlevel architecture of the Linux 2.4 kernel and to bring together commercial and open source engineers in a collaborative work that covers the core kernel, kernel module services and advanced applications such as real-time and embedded controllers.

  • KernelWiki is a side project of the KernelBook, an open collaborative writing environment for collecting tips and tutorials from the spare moments of kernel developers. The KernelWiki Challenge is a monthly prod foisted upon the linux-kernel mailing list daring developers to participate on specific topics in Kernel programming.

The Gentle Introduction to Emacspeak

Emacspeak is the "audio-desktop" computing system for blind users invented by TV Raman. This guide is intended for the non-programmer who may very limited experience with computers; the goal is to produce a guide for the complete novice, but this will also require producing a more novice-friendly "appliance" edition of Emacspeak. In the meantime, we have the Gentle Intro.

  • EmacspeakWiki is another application of the WikiWiki environment, this one compiling tips which will become a beginner's kit (or course) on Emacspeak and other Linux-based computing systems for the blind. Using this Wiki directly is not recommended for new Emacspeak users; it is hosted for the benefit of Emacspeak writers. This does not mean a novice will not find useful material in here, but just be warned that the Wiki syntax is a little strange to the uninitiated. Read all instructions carefully. Turn punctuation-mode on full.
